TTYredirector in Serial Applications
Equipment and software
-
Serial applications run on Linux-based x86 client computers.
-
Serial servers are placed on the network at remote locations and cabled to the remote devices.
-
TTYredirector is installed on the client computer.
-
A TTYredirector pseudo-tty device is configured for each remote serial device.
Networking
-
TTYredirector (on the client computer) must be able to make TCP/IP connections to serial servers on demand, using a specified TCP port number that the serial server accepts for a specific serial device.
-
For applications at a single site or organization, a local or managed network carries the TCP/IP connections to the serial servers. Over long distances, the Internet may provide an economical path.
-
Intervening firewalls must pass an outbound connection (most commonly using the Telnet protocol) to the specific IP address of the server and the TCP port(s) that TTYredirector may use.
Typical applications
-
Console-level management of servers and network equipment
-
Facility automation for access control, security systems, HVAC
-
Automated gas/electric meter reading, 911 systems, medical data collection, SCADA
